Solar expansion refers to the increase in size and volume of the sun as it evolves over time, particularly as it approaches the later stages of its life cycle. This process is primarily due to the consumption of hydrogen fuel in the sun’s core, leading to changes in nuclear fusion reactions. As hydrogen is depleted, the core contracts under gravity while the outer layers expand significantly, causing the sun to grow larger. Eventually, during the red giant phase, solar expansion results in the sun’s radius increasing to the point where it may engulf the inner planets of the solar system, including Earth. This phase is a natural part of stellar evolution for stars like the sun, which are classified as intermediate-mass stars. Solar expansion will ultimately lead to the sun shedding its outer layers and leaving behind a white dwarf.
